Winter Plumbing Emergency Prevention

Ohio winter can be pretty harsh and unforgiving meaning we don’t like to think about it any sooner than we have to. It is almost August though, so maybe it’s time to start making sure your home and its plumbing is ready for the approaching cold temperatures. Beginning to prepare for a winter weather early can help you make sure you have all your bases covered and help prevent a plumbing emergency. Let’s talk about some ways you can get your home ready.

  1. Frost Free Sill Cocks
Installing the frost-free sillcock will help water properly drain every time the pipe is used meaning there won’t be water left laying to freeze up. Unlike a typical faucet, the frost-free option’s valve, seal, and washer is found a little further back in the wall versus the standard faucet that is placed at the wall.

  1. Heat Cables
Running heat cables along vulnerable pipes can be a wonderful solution. The cables do need to be able to reach a power source since they have a running internal thermostat that reads the pipe temperature. If the temperature of the pipe begins to get too low they turn on to prevent freezing. You can find the heating cables at most home improvement stores.

  1. Insulation
Pipes that call home to an area that is unheated, like a garage or crawlspace, are extremely susceptible to freezing. They are oftentimes forgotten about until they cause an issue. Ensuring these pipes have proper insulation around them can save you from the mess when cold air reaches the pipes for just a little too long. You can combine insulation with heat cables we mentioned above for extra protection.

  1. Sealing Joints
Checking any places where a pipe exits the building is a key point in keeping out cold air. Using spray foam insulation around pipes where you feel drafts blowing through, or even ones that you haven’t sealed in a while is a great technique at keeping cold air out, which helps you in more ways than one.

5.Early Warnings
Some homeowners have been installing a thermostat that offers alerts of temperature change. These thermostats in the winter notify you if the room has fallen below a certain temperature. Being aware of the drop can help you quickly warm your home to prevent your plumbing from taking damage.
