Why Does My Home Have Low Water Pressure?

water pressure adjustment, prestige plumbing
Water pressure is the strength at which water is pushed out from your faucets and showerheads. The water pressure psi should be somewhere between 40 and 45 psi and should not exceed 60 psi. Most pressure regulators are adjusted by turning the screw on top of the adjuster. Dealing with an unusually low water pressure can affect daily tasks like showering and washing dishes. A lighter flow can be quite annoying, especially if you have tried to make a pressure adjustment. There may be an underlying cause if you are noticing extended periods of dropping water pressure.

One of the most commonly fixed culprits is a leak somewhere along the line. Even a small leak can cause a sudden drop in pressure since not all the available water is making it to the tap in use. If you think you have a potential leak, you can check around your home and basement for sudden wet spots. If you aren't seeing any new moisture but are still concerned you can turn off all taps in the home, record the water meter, then return to the meter in a few hours. If the meter has dropped, you most likely have a leak that should be addressed by the team at Prestige Plumbing.

Plumbing pipes aren't excluded from aging. Aged pipes can mean there is corrosion built up causing a water flow issue. While pipes, especially steel or galvanized plumbing pipe systems, are meant to last nearly 20 years, corrosion often starts before that. The natural corrosion can inhibit the proper flow of water. Debris and minerals that attach to the corrosion can add additional issues. Dirt, sand, and other debris can get caught up in the rough edges of corrosion and lead to further flow issues. If you are concerned about the health of your pipes, consider a video drain inspection from Prestige Plumbing to pinpoint the plumbing problem. Unfortunately, the only real solution to this is a pipe replacement.

Low water pressure isn't always associated with the plumbing in your home. If you have municipal water, there may be a supply malfunction. Like your home plumbing, municipal plumbing equipment is prone to leaks and breaks just the same. If this is a concern for you, call your local water carrier and ask if there are any reported issues. If you are having continued water pressure issues, a quick plumbing service is in order for you and your home. Prestige Plumbing offers video drain inspections as well as plumbing excavation to quickly repair and of your plumbing needs. You can relax knowing your plumbing is taken care of with Prestige Plumbing.
