Why Does My Toilet Keep Clogging?

Toilet clogs are one of the most common plumbing concerns homeowners experience. Occasionally, you can DIY your way through a toilet clog, but some cases may require the help of an experienced plumber professional like those at Prestige Plumbing. Dealing with clogs requires knowing the probable causes and through prevention. Knowing what to and not to flush down your toilet. Are you tired of your toilet clogging? Continue reading to learn the possible causes of a clog and the steps on how to avoid it.

When clogging happens, there is usually an item that is keeping the waste from flowing down. Incidentally, there are several non-flushable items that people tend to keep on flushing. Feminine products such as tampons or pads are the main suspects. They expand whenever you flush them and they take a long, time to breakdown in the sewer system. Next, you have your paper towels and cleaning wipes. You may think it's safe to flush them since the packaging usually comes with a "flushable" label. While this is true, they can still cause severe damage to your pipes in the long run. Q-Tips and cotton balls are another no-go. They can easily clump together in the pipes causing blockage. Too much toilet paper is another culprit that can compound an already existing clog that is building up in your pipes.

Now that you know some of the more common causes of blockages in your toilet, let's shift the focus to preventing your toilet from clogging.

First, try to practice mindful flushing. What this means is to only flush items that you know won't clog your toilets. A good rule of thumb to follow is that anything from your body along with toilet paper, is okay to flush every time. Anything beyond that is not toilet paper is a no-no. Secondly, double flushing can be a life saver. After eliminating your waste, flush the toilet before throwing your tissues paper down the toilet bowl. Thereafter, flush a second time with just the toilet tissues to ensure everything went down correctly. Finally, perform regular maintenance on your toilet. Mostly for aesthetic purposes to keep everything clean, this will also help you spot potential leaks faster. Spot any water dripping or pooling, trace where it's coming from and take action immediately.

Toilet clogs can be a semi-regular occurrence for people but with the proper maintenance and basic knowledge of what not to flush down your toilet, it can be avoidable.
