How to tell if your main sewer line is clogged:

  • If more than one drain in your house is running slowly, it is probably not a coincidence, but a sign that one clog is causing issues for all of them. Usually it will start on the first floor of your home, and as it gets worse will travel to the second floor drains. 
  • One major sign that you have a clog is if water is backing up from one drain to another. If you notice that water is starting to come up out of your shower or bath drains, or that your toilet fills with water when you are using a drain, then chances are your main sewer line is clogged.
  • If you hear a gurgling sound when you run water down the drain, flush the toilet, or run the washing machine, then that drain is having issues draining. The noises you hear is the water trying its hardest to get around the blockage. 
  • Last but not least, if you smell sewage odors coming from your drains that is a pretty clear sign that sewage water is backing up into them and that you need to take care of the situation fast.

How to care for a main sewer clog:

    If you are a DIY kind of person here are a few steps you can take to help unclog your sewer main line. 

  •  Stop using your water. With no other place to go it is just going to keep backing up into your home, causing an even bigger mess than you have already. 
  • If you can find your sewers clean out line then you may be able to release the pressure and get the water to drain by opening the cap.
