Should You Repair or Replace Your Laundry Faucet?

Leaky water faucets may require an experienced plumber.

Sometimes, it can be hard to tell if your faucet needs attention, and this is especially the case with laundry faucets, which are built differently than the average system. You may be wondering if it's appropriate to repair or replace the unit; where's the line, and when should you call in a professional? Take a look below as we expose two areas of evaluation:

Water pressure

When water releases, does it come out slow and weak? Or does it shoot out with high pressure? Whatever the case, neither are good scenarios. Abnormal water pressure can have many causes and is not always a faucet issue. You'll first want to decipher the cause. Doe the pipes need tightening? Do you need to check your pressure regulator? If you evaluate these concerns and the results are still unsatisfactory, you may need a plumber to address seam and fixture issues. You will also need to contact a plumber should the direction of the water point at an odd angle.

Leaks

This problem is usually linked to high water pressure, so the good news is that you probably won't experience leaks if your water pressure is balanced. In this case, don't replace the faucet, because it won't fix the problem. The bad news is that if these leaks are coming from the spout, you likely need a new faucet washer. And, if the leaks are coming from the handles, your valve stem needs replacement. A repair won't fix this issue because it is due to an aging faucet that has experienced too much friction to run smoothly. However, squeaky handles are still repairable, if handled by a seasoned plumber.

Of course, these are not the only areas of concern. If your faucet is corroded or rusty, it needs the attention of a pro.
